The Illinois Commerce Commission oversees public safety and consumer protection programs with regard to commercial motor carriers of general freight, household goods movers and relocation towers. Through a program of roadside and administrative enforcement, ICC limits public risk and protects public safety by assuring that trucking companies operating in Illinois are properly insured. ICC staff investigates complaints against moving companies and may assess penalties for illegal or unethical operations. ICC also provides dispute mediation services (Administrative Rule 1457), at no charge, to resolve issues between moving companies and their clients. The Commercial Transportation Law establishes general safety requirements for track, facilities and equipment belonging to rail carriers within Illinois, and gives the ICC jurisdiction to administer and enforce those requirements.
